No water. No trimming. No Thursday-morning panic when you’ve forgotten to change the vase. Dried flowers ask almost nothing of you — which is partly why they last so much longer than most people expect.

Here’s everything you need to know about keeping your dried flowers looking their best for as long as possible.

Keep Them Out of Direct Sunlight

This is the single most important rule. Direct sunlight will cause the colours in your dried flowers to fade over time, turning vibrant pinks and rich oranges into washed-out tones. A bright room with indirect, diffused light is ideal. Think of it like a painting, you wouldn’t hang a watercolour in a south-facing window, and your dried flowers deserve the same consideration.

Avoid Moisture and Humidity

Dried flowers and water don’t mix. Moisture is the enemy, it can cause mould, make petals go soft, or cause stems to droop. Keep your arrangements well away from bathrooms, kitchens, and anywhere steam or dampness might build up. If you live in a particularly humid climate, a room with good air circulation will help.

Handle with Care

Dried flowers are delicate by nature. While they’re surprisingly sturdy once arranged, individual petals and stems can be fragile. When moving an arrangement, hold it by the vase rather than the stems. Avoid placing them in high-traffic areas where they might get knocked or brushed against.

Gentle Dusting

Over time, dust will settle on your arrangement, it’s inevitable. The best way to keep them looking fresh is a gentle blast from a hairdryer on a cool, low setting, held at arm’s length. You can also use a very soft paintbrush or feather duster to carefully remove dust from individual stems. Never use water or cleaning sprays.

Keep Away from Heat Sources

Radiators, fireplaces, and even the heat from a lamp can dry out your flowers even further, making them brittle and prone to crumbling. Keep arrangements at least a foot away from any direct heat source.

Hairspray: The Secret Trick

A light mist of unscented hairspray can help preserve your dried flowers and reduce shedding. Hold the can about 30cm away and give a very light, even spray. This creates a subtle protective layer that helps petals and smaller blooms stay in place. Don’t overdo it though, one light coat is plenty.

When to Say Goodbye

Even with the best care, dried flowers won’t last forever. If you notice significant colour loss, excessive shedding, or a musty smell, it might be time to retire your arrangement. The good news? Dried flowers are completely biodegradable, pop them in the compost or garden waste bin. Then treat yourself to a fresh arrangement.

Where to Display Dried Flowers (And Where Not To)

Not every room treats dried flowers the same way. A few placement tips that make a real difference:

Living rooms and bedrooms are ideal — moderate light, controlled temperature, and low humidity. These are the rooms where your arrangements will last longest and look their best.

Hallways and entryways work well for tall, dramatic arrangements like dried pampas grass in floor vases. Just watch for high-traffic brushing against delicate stems.

Kitchens are fine as long as you keep arrangements away from the hob, kettle steam, and sink splash zone. A windowsill arrangement on the dry side of the kitchen is lovely.

Bathrooms are the one room to avoid. The humidity from showers and baths will cause mould on dried stems and make preserved flowers lose their glycerine treatment. If you want flowers in the bathroom, silk or faux is the safer choice.

Common Mistakes That Shorten Their Life

Most people get dried flower care right instinctively. But a few common mistakes can cut their lifespan short:

Placing them in water. It sounds obvious, but we hear this more than you might think. Dried flowers are already preserved — adding water undoes that entirely. No water, ever.

Overcrowding a vase. Stems need airflow around them. Packing too many stems into a tight vase traps moisture and dust between them, which leads to mould and accelerated deterioration.

Moving them constantly. Every time you handle dried flowers, there is a small risk of shedding or snapping. Find a spot you love, place them, and let them be.

Ignoring dust buildup. A gentle shake or cool hairdryer blast every few weeks keeps your flowers fresh. Leaving dust to accumulate for months makes the arrangement look tired and can attract moisture from the air.

Displaying them next to an open window. A breeze might seem harmless, but wind carries moisture and can physically damage delicate petals. Near a window is fine; directly in a draught is not.

How Long Should You Expect Them to Last?

With proper care, most dried flower arrangements look their best for one to three years. Some hardier stems — like pampas grass, wheat, and cotton — can last even longer. Preserved flowers (those treated with glycerine) tend to outlast air-dried flowers by a year or two because the treatment keeps them supple.

You will notice gradual changes over time: colours may soften slightly, and some natural shedding is normal. This is not a sign of poor quality — it is simply the nature of natural materials ageing gracefully. When an arrangement starts to look noticeably faded or sparse, it is time for a refresh.
